"Bella" is a beagle who was rescued from Columbia County Animal Shelter in Lake City, FL, and enrolled in a rigorous four-month bedbug scent-detection training program with Pepe at J&K Canine Academy, Inc. Bella has also been certified by the National Entomology Scent-Detection Canine Association. Bella is particularly well-suited for this work, both because of her temperament and the fact that she is a beagle. Beagles are a breed of dogs which are classified as scent-hounds.
Bedbugs can hide in alarm clocks, baseboards, upholstery and other locations which may not be readily inspected by the human eye. This is just one reason the services of a trained bed bug dog may be invaluable to a property owner or management company. When Bella and her handler make a sweep of a room, Bella alerts Sarah of the presence of the odor of live bedbugs or viable eggs. Sarah can then communicate to you exactly where our trained scent-detection canine found the odor, so that an extermination professional can do a more targeted job, reducing the use of pesticides and interruption to your business.
When a human visually scans a room for bedbugs, he or she is between 30 to 40% accurate and takes 30 to 45 minutes. Bella is more than 90% accurate and takes only 3 to 4 minutes to totally sweep the room and identify the location of the scent of live bedbug eggs, nymphs and adults.
